Neonatal intensive care (NICU).

A neonatal intensive care unit is a hospital department for newborn babies who need closer observation or specialized medical care after birth. The care a baby needs is individual and is determined by their clinical team.

What NICU care means

NICU care is hospital-based care for newborns who need more observation or medical support than routine newborn care. The clinical team assesses each baby and discusses the care plan with the parents or guardians.

Who may need specialized newborn care?

Depending on a baby’s condition, clinicians may recommend closer hospital care for newborns who:

  • are born prematurely or at a low birth weight;
  • need assessment or support with breathing, feeding, or temperature;
  • need observation or treatment for a health concern identified around birth.

These are general examples, not a diagnosis or a list of admission criteria.

About services at CMC: The center’s current department directory lists a main-branch NICU as active. Specific equipment, staffing, admission criteria, visiting arrangements, and currently available services are not published here; please confirm these directly with the center.
